Sea Kayaking Basics Course

If visiting some of the most dynamic places on the planet, bird watching or just slipping onto a lake after work with new friends interests you, then the Seattle Mountaineers Sea Kayaking Basics course is for you.

The Sea Kayaking Basics course is offered once each year, beginning in March, by the Seattle Mountaineers. Most of the instruction in this course is based on the principles developed by the American Canoe Association, and an increasing number of our instructors are certified by that nationally acclaimed organization.

To participate in Mountaineers-sponsored kayak trips, you must be a graduate or continuing student of this course or have received equivalency. However, no prior sea kayaking knowledge or experience is required to participate in this course.

All instruction is offered in single sea kayaks. If you do not own or have access to a kayak (single sea kayak w/bulkheads or appropriate floatation), you will need to rent one on three occasions in order to complete the course (see below.)

This course consists of four classroom sessions, one 3-hour pool session, and an all-day open-water session. To graduate, students must also complete two qualifying paddles, with one paddle being on salt water by September 30.

Course Fees: $195 payable upon registration.
Additional Costs: Kayak rental on three occasions – Open-Water Day and the two qualifying paddles. Immersion gear is also required.
Registration: Begins January 1. Please see the Go-Guide or Seattle Sea Kayaking postings on the Mountaineers website for more information and specific class dates.
